Ever mispeeled…um, mispelled…er, misspeled… Do you have trouble with typos? Well, my friend, you are not alone! Almost everyone does, and since folks are always in such a hurry online, they seldom stop to correct before hitting “enter.” It has been estimated that up to 10% of all search engine queries are misspelled. Some enterprising entrepreneurs snatch up common misspellings of large, well-known Internet entities to use as their own Web addresses and to ply their own wares. These people are called typo-squatters, or cyber-squatters. Savvy Internet companies such as Google have launched preemptive strikes, using the most commonly misspelled renditions of their name to mirror their site. If you type gogle.com or googel.com, you are still directed to the Google home page.

While many consider cyber-squatting an unsavory way to do business, it does illustrate the viability of using misspelled names and keywords to drive business to a website. You may or may not wish to purchase various typographical interpretations of your web-site’s name, but you should certainly consider utilizing misspelled keywords on your site’s pages.

When it comes to serch search engine optimization, using commonly mistyped versions of your keywords can be very affective effective. By leaving out letters, reversing letters, or using characters next to the correct letter on the keyboard, you can easily produce a number of likely typos. Some go so far as to include the misspelled words in the content of their web page, but this can be treacherous. Visitors and potential advertisers will take too many typos as a lack of profeshunulizm professionalism, so be careful with that.

You know the drill. In the real world, location is paramount to the success of a business. Well, in cyberspace, your Internet address is your location.
